Settings Guide: IP Exclusion, Retention, Sharing, and Session Recording in statpx

The Settings page is where you configure how a statpx site behaves rather than what happened on it. It covers four independent controls — excluding your own traffic, how long raw data is kept, a public share link for stakeholders who don't need a login, and session recording — plus a label to keep multiple sites organized. This guide walks through each one.

Excluding Your Own Traffic

Every time you or your team visits your own site, that pageview lands in your analytics right alongside real visitors — inflating counts and skewing behavior metrics like bounce rate and time on page. The IP exclusion field on Settings takes a list of IPs or CIDR ranges, one per line, and any hit from a matching address is filtered out of your reported numbers before it's ever counted. This is especially important for teams working from a fixed office IP or VPN range, where internal testing traffic can otherwise be a meaningful share of total volume. See the full explainer on filtering internal traffic for more on why this matters and how to find your own IP.

Data Retention

The retention setting controls how many days of raw hit-level data statpx keeps before it's cleaned up, from 30 days up to 10 years. Aggregated rollups (daily/monthly totals) aren't affected by this setting — it only governs the granular, per-visit records used for detailed reports. Set it based on your own compliance or storage needs; there's no "right" answer, but most sites are well served by 365 days unless you have a specific reason to keep raw data longer or shorter.

Public Share Link

Enabling public sharing generates a unique, hard-to-guess link that shows a read-only version of your dashboard to anyone who has it — no statpx account required. This is the fastest way to give a one-off viewer (an investor update, a public status page, a quick check-in with a client) access to your numbers without going through a full invite. It's different from the Team page, which is built for ongoing, role-scoped access tied to a real account — use the share link for anonymous, read-only, drop-in viewing and Team for anyone who needs recurring access.

The share link exposes live data to anyone who has it. Only enable it if you're comfortable with that link circulating — you can disable sharing at any time from the same Settings page, which immediately invalidates the link.

Session Recording Controls

Settings also controls session recording as three separate values:

Changes to these three values take effect immediately for new sessions — there's a short propagation delay while the change is picked up by the tracking script on your live pages.

Site Label

If you manage several sites in one account, the label field on Settings lets you tag each one with a short custom name — useful for grouping staging vs production, or separating client sites by account manager. It's purely organizational and doesn't affect data collection or reporting in any way.

The Bottom Line

Settings is where you make a statpx site match how you actually work: filter out your own team's noise, decide how long raw data sticks around, open a read-only window for people who don't need an account, and dial session recording up or down to match your traffic volume. None of these require touching code or contacting support — every control lives on one page and takes effect immediately.
